2006 Campaign - against homophobia in sports

"Because it is important that everyone PARTICIPATES, without DISCRIMINATION."

So ends the text of the campaign by Panteres Grogues in early 2006 to combat homophobia in sport. Panteres Grogues launched this campaign to all sports clubs in Barcelona.

The campaign, funded by the "la Regidoria de Dona i Drets Civils de l'Ajuntament" (Women and Civil Rights of the Barcelona City Council), consisted of distributing posters and leaflets among clubs and sports clubs of Barcelona and some of the rest of Catalonia thanks to the collaboration of the "l'Institut Barcelona Esports" (Barcelona Sports Institute) of the City of Barcelona.

It is estimated that approximately 10% of the population is gay. 11.099 athletes from all over the world participated in the last Olympic Games in Antenes. As a result, there should have been more than 1000 gay athletes competing in these Games, but the reality is that only 12 were openly homosexual. The homophobia that surrounds the world of sport requires gays and lesbians athletes to hide their affection.

Silence and ignorance is the most subtle and most atrocious display of homophobia with which to confront gay and lesbian people in the world of sport. Gays and lesbians also do sport, and each person's sexual orientation shouldn't be a cause for exclusion or discrimination.
